Zhanjiang City is situated in the south-west of Guangdong, comprising the whole Leizhou Peninsula and some northern part of the Peninsula, bordering on South China Sea in the east, looking toward Hainan Provinve across the Qiongzhou Strait, with Beibu Gulf to its west. Zhanjiang Port and more than 20 other ports along the shoreline of Leizhou Peninsula have formed a port group, which have 170 quay berths and an annual discharge capacity of 31.64 million tons. With twenty-four quay berths for vessels with tonnage of 10,000T -50,000 T and an annual discharge capacity of 18 million tons, Zhanjiang Port is a national grade hub port and one of the ten biggest ports of China. Zhanjiang Port has great potential of development as it has favorable conditions to be built as an international first class big port, for example, 241 km inner harbor shoreline, including 97 km deepwater shoreline, 6.5 km deepwater shoreline with water depth up to 26-40m, where deep water quay berths for cargo vessels with tonnage of 300,000 T and oil tankers with tonnage of 500,000 T. Rich marine resources. Zhanjiang is a city with abundant marine resources, including 1556 km long shoreline, accounting for 46% of the shoreline of Guangdong Province, 450,000 hectares shallows with depth contour of 10m and 150,000 km2 offshore fishing zone, i.e., North Bay fishing zone and Yuexi fishing zone, which are available for fishing all year around (except during the fishing off season). Zhangjiang has abundant marine products, including 520 kinds of commercial fishes, 30 kinds of shrimps and over 540 kinds of shellfishes. The sea area of Zhanjiang is one of the four main marine oil and gas reserve centers of the world. China Marine Oil Nanhai Sea West Corporation is located at Zhanjiang and has recently started the large-scale development stage.
Favorable natural conditions. Located at the transition region of tropical zone and subtropical zone at 20¡ã12¡ä- 21¡ã35¡äN and 109¡ã31¡ä- 110¡ã55¡äE, Zhanjiang is rich in light-heat resources and precipitation. It is not cold in winter and not hot in summer, like spring all the year around. The mean annual temperature in Zhanjiang is around 23¡ãC and the mean annual precipitation is around 147mm. The unique geographic environment and climate conditions enable Zhanjiang to develop tropical and subtropical crops that cannot be planted in other regions of China. Zhanjiang is an important sugarcane production area of China and has the largest eucalyptus production base and sisal hemp production base of China. In addition, Zhanjiang also abounds vegetables for supply to other regions and high quality tropical and subtropical fruits. An important initiation of Zhanjiang in the near future is to construct South Asia Tropical Agriculture Model Zone and South Asia Tropical Agricultural Tourist and Sightseeing Belt.
Seaside tourism with unique characteristics.
